Advertisers are always looking for new ways to sell their products. Pop-ups, for example. But surely there’s a more effective way to deliver your message than a pop-up? And by “more effective,” I mean “more intrusive and annoying.” The people at Holosonic Research Labs have been working on this, and they’ve found the answer: voices beamed into your skull. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonics that transmits an “audio spotlight” from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium.
The billboard in question is promoting Paranormal State a new series on A&E, and suddenly hearing a woman’s voice inside your head whispering, “It’s not just your imagination” when you look at the billboard sounds a like a pretty damn effective way to get people’s attention. Holosonics developed the technology as a means of beaming audio messages in quiet environments like museums and libraries, but oddly enough the advertising possibilities have leaped to the front of the queue. If this technique catches on, then at some point in the near future at least one of the voices in my head is going to take a powerful dislike to Holosonic Research Labs.
