Adverts That Work #46: Vengeful Brides & Jewish Zombies

Source: agentbedhead.com

kill bill

It was nearly impossible to resist mention of this billboard in Auckland, NZ, which promotes a local television screening of Quentin Tarantino’s first Kill Bill flick. This billboard, featuring Uma Thurman as The Bride, actually appears to bleed into the street-level dimension, which includes the two affected white cars as part of the advert itself. This is quite possibly the coolest advert in recent cinematic history, which bizarrely refers to content thar is relegated to the television screen.

After spotting the Tarantino advert, I pulled out a few more examples of odd placements for film billboards. The below billboard for the The Bourne Ultimatum actually appeared on the side of Matt Damon’s apartment building (photo shamelessly swiped from The Smoking Gun). Meanwhile, the advert for Resident Evil: Extinction was located, quite amusingly, on the side of a NYC Jewish synogogue building. Theoretically speaking, zombie apocalypses don’t discriminate on the basis of religion, right?

What We Talk About When We Talk About Doherty

Pete DohertyKate Moss and Jamie Dornan for Calvin Klein

We often receive emails (some nicer than others) that inquire what “this strange fascination” with Pete Doherty is all about. Unfortunately, no immediate answer to that question exists. However, let’s kick off this shindig of a discussion with a tantalizing tidbit from Holy Moly:

Pete Doherty gets so wasted when taking heroin that he thinks he has glass under his skin (apparently it’s a common side effect). He then gouges chunks of his skin out to try and remove it. A mole tells us that he has a hole in his foot that is now so large that he no longer needs to use a needle to get a hit as it just goes in like a dream.

With that in mind, we’ll quickly move onto a dispatch from Flea, who alerted us to a Dior advert that features male model Jamie Dornan and music by Pete Doherty & Wolfman (yes, this guy). Also enclosed was a mini-revelation from Flea:

Ok, now I get it. He has a great voice. The rest of it is what they overlook because they know the real him through his music. God what a scam.

Flea, being a clever fellow, has partially nailed it. However, I shall admit that I do hope the puzzle is never entirely solved, or else there will be no more need for Doherty posts. That would be a sad day, mates.

However, the aforementioned Dior advert has caused me to realize that if the KLF were to reinvent Pete Doherty, they may want to use a guy that looks a lot like Jamie Dornan. Then again, that would defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it? Video can be found below:

Washington Post On The Fold

This Washington Post newspaper clipping, entitled a “A Flick to Brighten Anyone’s Day,” involves a film review of No Country For Old Men. While this review’s title would be bizarre enough on its own, an unintentional above-and-below-the-fold placement results in what looks like a boldfaced suggestion of “A F*ck To Brighten Anyone’s Day.” To that, I have absolutely no response.

Thanx to AdRants for the giggle.

Kate Moss and Longchamp Meet Again

longchamp

Kate Moss poses for yet another Longchamp campaign in New York City, which seems like the perfect venue from which to promote a French line of overpriced bags. Perhaps I just don’t, you know, get it.

P.S. I still hate those bangs.

Penelope Cruz

In between movies, Penelope Cruz has been promoting for the Mango clothing line that she and sister Monica co-design. Penelope is seen here modelling pieces from the 2008 Spring-Summer collection. You can see more of Penelope, along with Monica, promoting Mango and various other familial interests here, there, and over yonder.

Kirsten Dunst Is Fierce(ly Something)

Kirsten Dunst looks, well, interesting in the latest typically crazy red-purple Miu Miu advert campaign. While I’m not crazy about Kiki’s impression that she is indespensible to the Spiderman franchise, Kirsten is preferable to Miu Miu’s last celebrity spokesperson, Lindsay Lohan, who appeared in bizarre Little Orphan Annie-styled adverts.

While I’m not sure what ugly, overpriced handbags have to do with all of this, I will admit that Kirsten’s legs look do absolutely gorgeous in these proofs:

Holy crap! This would be one of those jaw-dropping moments where my usual verbal diarrhea is rendered useless. This 1979 advert that highlighted Pakistani International Airlines flights into New York City, is definitely, uh, creepy.

Monica and Penelope Cruz Are Doing It Again

Last time we saw Penelope Cruz and her sister, Monica, they were shilling from their brother in that steamy music video. This time, the sisters are selling their own crap — their second clothing collection for the Mango label. As per their usual routine, the siblings are photographed in a rather “androgynous” fashion with “oversized men’s shirts and fedora hats.” Certainly, the Cruz sisters are really looking to play up their mutual femininity, don’t you think?

AOL.com couldn’t be any lamer if it were worked over by Kathy Bates from Misery. Nevertheless, Larry King’s favorite gateway to the internets has managed to produce a pretty funny video for AOL News featuring three of the more ridiculous flashes in the pan from the recent past, so I guess they deserve some points for that. Although they do seem to think that Chris Crocker, Miss Teen South Carolina, and the “Don’t tase me, bro!” dude qualify as news. So on second thought, AOL is still lame.

In a past lifetime, I must have been a proper English girl, although the “proper” attribute may be the operative term. Anyway, Rowan Atkinson’s “Mr. Bean” character rarely fails to make me giggle:

Kate Moss Doesn’t Mind The Rubbish

Kate Moss Topshop Winter 2008Kate Moss Topshop Winter 2008

Kate Moss (along with sometimes pal Amy Winehouse) might be actively ignoring her recent scrutiny coming from the UN, but those in positions of actual power don’t see a problem. Donna Karan has recently finished a spring 2008 advert campaign starring Miss Moss:

Although Moss has walked on Karan’s runway plenty of times, this marks the first occasion she will appear in the designer’s ads. “We went cinematographic,” Karan explained. “We wanted to tell a story, and we wanted somebody who had energy, passion, sophistication and cool. You put it all together and it says ‘Kate.’”

It sounds like Donna Karan may have done the photograph shoot before writing that “story” she alludes to. Certainly, the trickle-down benefits of Kate’s “effortlessly cool” Topshop slogan don’t limit themselves to just one fashion label. In the above & below promotional shots for her Winter 2008 Topshop line, Kate looks as if she couldn’t care less about much at all. This aloofness is most likely the secret to Kate’s continued success.

Matt Dillon Looks Like a Pump, Feels Like a Sneaker

Source: agentbedhead.com

Matt Dillon for SkechersMatt Dillon for Skechers

This advert campaign — Matt Dillon for Skechers — doesn’t exactly fall under the “Adverts That Work” series that, incidentally, has largely been discontinued for lack of viable candidates. At any rate, I’m not quite sure what Dillon is supposed to be promoting in these images: (a) Skechers will make people think you’re a douche, (b) Skechers will allow you to steal chicks from their boyfriends, or (c) Skechers will cause lack of judgment when partying with Marilyn Manson. Strangely, none of these options seems too appealing to prospective male customers who don’t want to get their asses totally kicked.
