Colton Harris-Moore is the Barefoot Burglar
I knew the story of Colton Harris-Moore would go national.
You see, the “Barefoot Burglar” as he’s known as around here, is still on the loose. The 18-year-old has a long rap sheet and has been leading a life of crime since he was 12-years-old.
He hails from Camano Island, a small island off the coast of Washington. For years he terrorized locals by stealing cars, boats and lately, even airplanes. He is called the ‘barefoot bandit’ because he’s left footprints at the scene of his crimes.
In April, Colton snuck out of a halfway house and has since been suspected in approximately 50 cases. Since then, the teen has turned 18, and when he is caught, if he is caught alive, his penalties will be far greater than if he had turned himself in before turning 18.
Amazingly, this kid is suspected of stealing three airplanes. Two in Washington and one in Idaho. At least one of the planes was started with a screwdriver. And not only has this kid pretty much taught himself to fly, he even flew over the Cascade mountain range, which according to local pilots I have talked with, is not an easy task.
Colton’s last known whereabouts was a home he burglarized in Granite Falls, WA. The couple returned home to see that someone had taken clothes and eaten food. A makeshift camp was found deep in the woods behind the home. This area was also in close proximately to where one of the stolen planes was taken from.
Police responded to the call and were shot at, presumably, by Colton. That’s when the manhunt really began. Homeland Security was called in and a Blackhawk helicopter with heat-seeking equipment began the search. The search was eventually called off, with Colton still on the loose.
The local news channels have visited Colton’s mother, and after you hear this woman and her reasoning, you can immediately see where Colton’s troubles began. With her.
KING 5 News
Pamela Kohler, Colton’s mother, told King 5 news that her son has a genius I.Q., that the police have singled out her son, and that they blame everything on him. Another mother who thinks her child can do no wrong. But it gets worse.
She says of her son:
“If he flew planes, I’m proud. Because he would have had to teach hisself [sic].”
She adds that she is working on a book deal about her son’s ordeal and would use the money to open an animal shelter. Something he says, that her son would love.
Colton currently has more than 2,600 Facebook “fans”.
